Choosing the Right Voltage Stabilizer Capacity: A Simple Guide for Distributors

Choosing a voltage stabilizer is not simply about matching one kVA number with the customer’s equipment power.
For distributors, an incorrect recommendation can lead to overload trips, unstable output, customer complaints and unnecessary after-sales costs. An oversized model, however, may make the final price less competitive.
So, how can sales teams make a better initial recommendation?

Start with the Right Questions

Before selecting a stabilizer, ask the customer:
  • What is the local nominal voltage?
  • What are the lowest and highest measured voltages?
  • Is the system single-phase or three-phase?
  • What equipment will be connected?
  • What is the equipment power or rated current?
  • Are there motors, pumps, compressors or air conditioners?
  • Which devices will operate at the same time?
When customers do not know the exact power, ask for clear equipment nameplate photos.

Calculate the Basic Load

When equipment power and power factor are known:
Required kVA = Equipment kW ÷ Power Factor
For example, an 8kW machine with a power factor of 0.8 requires approximately:
8 ÷ 0.8 = 10kVA
A capacity margin should then be added. For general electronic or mixed loads, an additional 20–30% is often used as an initial reference.
Motor loads require more careful calculation because their starting current may be much higher than their normal operating current.

Do Not Ignore Low Input Voltage

A 10kVA stabilizer may not deliver its full rated capacity when the input voltage becomes extremely low.
Lower input voltage requires higher input current to maintain the same output power. Distributors should therefore confirm both the stabilizer’s operating range and its full-load input range.

Build a Product Range for Your Market

Residential markets commonly need 1–5kVA models for individual appliances and 10–20kVA models for whole-house applications.
Commercial and industrial markets may require higher capacities, three-phase systems, wider input ranges and different technologies such as relay, servo, SCR or inverter-based stabilizers.
The best product portfolio should reflect local voltage conditions, common applications and customer budgets.
